Fish stores in D.C. and San Francisco

I'll have to do some business travelling to D.C. and San Francisco in March and April. Any recommendations regarding good fish stores in these cities? I'm looking for West African cichlids, characins, and/or Synodontis. Thanks.

Hi, not sure about d.c. but baltimore has 2 very good stores. one called the aquarium center and another called exotic aquatics and it's not too long a drive from d.c. maybe 45 mins. and while you're here you should certainly check out the national aquarium in baltimore, and the amazonia exibit at the zoo in d.c.

The street is more like an alley and easy to miss. Best to park on Polk and walk. Very good selection of dwarf cichlids, SA and westies. He breeds a lot of fish in-store, matter of fact the store looks more like a hobbyists fish room. Highly recommended.

Aqua Forest in San Francisco
1718 Fillmore St.

They don't have many (if any) dwarf cichlids but they are the best planted tank store I have ever seen. Lots of cool stuff and interesting and rare fish. Worth a look.

Ocean Aquarium

Hello Nebraska,

As already mentioned, my favorite shop in San Francisco is Ocean Aquarium on Ceder St. between Van Ness and Polk. Justin, the owner, is a "westies" fanatic! While you're there, enjoy the great selection of aquatic plants as well.

I'll definitely pay a visit to Ocean Aquarium. Do you happen to have Justin's email address so that I can contact him regarding a stocklist? Also, do you know whether Justin has styrofoam boxes etc. on hand? After all, I would have to carry the fish onto the plane. Thanks.

I made it to San Francisco and paid mt first visit Ocean Aquarium. It's located within walking distance to my hotel! This is an excellent store and Justin is a great guy. I'll stop by again Tuesday night to pick up some fish before Wednesday's departure. I plan on getting P. signatus, P. sp. Blue fin, and perhaps some H. sp. Moanda. (For the latter I'll need to start a new thread to find out about their aggressiveness.) There's much more great stuff at the store but I'll need to contain myself. Anyway, thank you Randall and Rahul for referring me to the store!

Ocean Aquarium

Hello Nebraska,

Get the Hemichromis sp. "Moanda!" They are not nearly as aggressive as most of the other Hemichromis species and are remarkably beautiful.

Annandale Super Pets just outside of DC

Hi,

I live in DC. One of the best stores I've found is just outside of DC in Annandale, VA, about 15 min away.
They have a great selection of Africans. Give em a look when your in the area. Off of New York Ave take 395 south towards Richmond. Get off at Little River turnpike and stay on it; go about 5 mi. to John Marr Dr. turn left and about 1/4 mi on the left is Annandale Super Pets.
