I have some fish that I got from Jeff Rapps (www.tangledupincichlids.com) a few weeks ago. The dwarf cichlids I got are Archocentrus sp. 'honduran red point', Archcentrus spinosissimus (wild pair), and Laetacara dorsigerous. The Leatacara came in great, but I lost 3 of 4 to a bacterial disease that I got from purchasing some platies from a store about an hour and a half away (closest store)...
The honduran redpoints came in smaller than I expected, and one of four was DOA. Jeff was very quick to issue credit for that fish.. great customer service. They grow fast though, and have already doubled in size. They start out looking just like a convict, but at 1.5 inch they are starting to show the blue that they are famous for. No red fins yet though. Based solely on growth rate differences, I think I have a male and two females.
The A. spinosissimus pair is the cream of the order. I am confident that the male could be a hack of a show fish someday. He is 4 inches and the fin filaments trail at least 1/2 inch behind his tail when his fins are erect!!! The pair is very shy though. I am waiting on plants for their tank. I placed a large plastic in to tide them over, and they started cleaning it today... maybe they will hang fry on it soon.
I also got some larger species. Four Vieja heterospilus, which is a relatively peaceful Vieja that gets big and colorful. Four Herichthys carpintis 'escondido' which is a truly stunning green texas cichlid.. even at 2 inches! The spots are already turquoise in color. Four Gymnogeophagus labiatus, which is aneat SA earth-eater. The males get up to about 8 inches, but hte females stay smaller than 5 inches. They are a delayed mouth brooder that is a bit of a challenge to breed and rear. I also got 5 Theraps irregularis.. these are probably going to end up my favorites of the order. It is an elongated central american cichlid that comes from fast water. They are quite colorful, even at 2-3 inches. Very active and very territorial, but not brutal on each other (yet). It is definitely an 'oddball' cichlid.
Jeff is a great guy to buy from. Excellent prices, packing, variety of fish and customer service... His variety is amazing.. though low on dwarf cichlids. Take a look at his site...
