Does anyone know where I can get a photo of Divandu albimarginatus from Congo (Brazzaville) and Gabon? :?

Thanks!

Dear Neil,

I wish I had some of them. Divandu albimarginatus is a new species and genus recently erected to describe a chromidotilapiine cichlid endemic to Congo and Gabon.

There is but one hobbyist that I know of in the world who supposedly has them in France, and he's keeping them under wraps.

I'm finishing up an article about them for the Apisto-Gram, so please keep an eye out for the upcoming issues. After the article is published, if there's enough interest in this beautiful little fish, I've been toying with the idea of a species maintenance program here in the US. D. albimarginatus will probably never be a commercially viable species, so it's up to us to introduce it to, and keep it alive in, the hobby.

More to come!

Randall,
I can think of know better way to get unique West African Cichlids more publicity than to start a species maintenance program. This is a fish that I would be most interested in working with, because of its rarity, if nothing else. Please keep us apprised of developments. By all means, initiate a species maintenance program.

Hello,

Excuse me Randall for delay! I change of house (I don't know the word to say it!) and it take me a long time.

So I 've 7 Divandu that I caugth in Gabon in Summer 2001. They are rare in aquarium but in Gabon I manage to catch a lot of them!

They seem to live isolated as I didn't catch a lot of them a the same place (by comparison with the sympatric species of Chromidotilapia)
I find them in little stream as in the Lekoni river ( 60 m large)
In aquarium they stay behind a rock or a piece of wood. They need a quite big aquarium because they are aggressive together. Like Chromidotilapia they are eartheaters but less specialized.
Males reach 20 cm females are smaller. Only males have long fins.

This species is probably a mouthbreeder. I have one of my females that keep eggs or fry in mouth but I can't tell more because I didn't saw them dayly :?

Husbandy of Divandu albimarginatus

Dear Florent,

Welcome to our forum, and thank you for sharing your experience with D. albimarginatus with us!!!

For those who are not familiar with this monotypic cichlid genus and species from Gabon and Congo (Brazzaville), Mag. Dr. Anton Lamboj and Dr. Jos Snoeks published their description in 2000 for a cichlid originally collected in Congo (Brazzaville) that although related to Chromidotilapia, couldn't be assigned to any existing genera of Chromidotilapiine cichlid.

M. Florent de Gasperis is an advanced level hobbyist and collector who is probably the only enthousiast in the world who has experience with this rare and magnificent West/Central African cichlid species.

Florent, please keep us informed concerning any additional observations.

Thank you!

 Is green a good color on me? I don't know if I'm more jealous that people have these fish or that Florent has actually been to West Africa collecting. If I ever had a chance/choice, and as much as I like my dwarfs, I'd have to say West Africa would be the destination over South America...off to dream of a vacation...

BTW, how does Divandu albimarginatus translate? What's the meaning behind it's name?

Dear Ken,

The etymology is Divandu albimarginatus is as follows:

Divandu - Local venacular for Chromidotilapia-like cichlids in Congo (Brazzaville). Gender: masculine.

Albimarginatus - "Albus" (Latin) white, "marginatus" (Latin) edged, boardered.

Albimarginatus refers to the white boarder on the lower edge of the caudal fin.

When I can get it finished, an article concerning this most fascinating West/Central African cichlid species will be published.

Good fishing!
