Hello,

I am new here, but not new to dwarf cichlids by any means. I am picking up two pairs of crenicichla wallacei here in the next couple of days and I will be keeping them in a heavily wooded 33 gallon XL tank (48x12x12). I was wondering what you guys would recommend for tank mates? Any tetras or apistogramma species that would fair well with them? I have only kept pike cichlids once in my life and it was an sp. xingu and got big. I am looking for anyone's insight on what to do. The tank has 6 pieces of driftwood currently and some large anubias plants.

Thanks Guys,

NV

Well, I have kept the Cr. wallacii that has been coming out of Colombia ... though I don't believe these to be the true/real Cr. wallacii (which is from Guyana).

They will go for tetras that, while not big enough to swallow, have small enough heads to fit in their mouths. Larger tetras were fine, I kept them with rummynose without issues. I also kept them with dwarf acaras and african rams before, again without issue. This wasn't in as big a tank either, a 36"x15" 38 gallon. They aren't quite as aggressive towards each other as noto dwarf pikes, but much more so than regani dwarf pikes.

I've found the recent "Wallaci" pikes to be very aggressive towards each other. They tend to leave the non-cichlid fish alone, so some tough tetras species should be fine. I would be careful with apistogrammas. I've found the two to be bitter arch enemies. There seems to be a genetic hatred towards each other...

I have kept them with Heckel Discus, Black Phantom Tetras and Apistogramma borelli. These Dwarf Pikes rather harass each other than other fish.
