Can I keep Kribs?

Hi All.

I have a 5 foot, 400 litre community tank, with Bala sharks, clown loaches, a breeding pair of bristlenose catfish, and a variety of tetras and barbs in it.

I have been asked if I can rescue a female krib, and I am not sure if it will fit in with the current occupants. If I was to rescue her, I would also like to get a male as I understand this would be best for her. Or would that not be necessary for her happiness? Would they get too aggressive if they started to breed?

My priority is always the welface of the fish, and if she would not be happy in my tank on her own, or if a pair would be truouble for the other fish, then I would rather someone else rescue her.

Thanks.

Ian.

Kribs would do great in your tank. Go buy that gal a male and you will have a lot of fun watching them parade groups of fry all over the place. :D

My only comments are with respect to some of the fish in your tank. Thankfully, they are very slow growing fish, but both Bala Sharks and Clown Loaches can grow very large. Bala's can grow to 12" in the aquarium, and have been known as large as 18". Clown Loaches can grow to about the same size, though rarely above 8" in the aquarium.

Just something to keep in mind more then anything else.

Cheers guys.
She will be rescued.

As for the Balas and clowns, I know how big they get, and I am commited to getting larger tanks as necessary. I'm already on my third tank in two years!! The Balas grow quite quickly up to about 6 inches or so (where they are now) and then slow right down. Should be ok in the 5 foot for another 18 months or so.

We will be building out own house in the next couple of years, so that will give me the opportunity to build something outragously large, and custom made.

At which point I will also fill an entire room with apisto and dwarf tanks :D

Dear Ian,

You better watch out! It sounds like you're developing an acute case of dwarf fever. This kindly little Pelvicachromis pulcher rescue may be your downfall.

Good luck and cheers!

All the best,

Randall Kohn

Oh it's far too late for any of that.

And if the missus ound out it's a disease, she'd start trying to find a cure, so it's best she doesn't know.

Situation has changes slightly, in that I have had to move one of my Inca50 into the community, as she was getting a really hard time of it from the other female and male. I will happily put another male in there with her if that's in her best interests. How would that affect the Kribs?

Bearing in mind the breeding pair of Bristlenose, would I be pushing my luck on floorspace?

Cheers.

Ian.

400litre Tank

Dear Ian,

Given the size of your tank, I don't think it would be a problem if you had two breeding pairs of dwarf cichids in a community environment. Both Apistogramma and Pelvicachromis are cave spawners. It would be ideal if each pair set up shop on opposite ends of the tank. Perhaps you could position the breeding caves accordingly.

Good luck!

:) I wonder if the same arguments would apply to the (un)usually excluded Family : Badidae.

!! Don't waste your time Randall, I've already read the the reports by Sven Kullander and Ralf Britz, and realise that they have better things to do. :)

All the Best Randall, and I really mean that.
