Hello Ladies and Gents,

It is with great pleasure that the British Cichlid Association can announce their plans for the Spring Convention 2011 which will take place on the 1st May, 2011. The committee have been working tirelessly to arrange a fantastic event and details can be found below.

We have chosen Lodge Park Social Club in Redditch (West Midlands) as our venue once again. This serves as a ideal central location for our event and gives the greater majority a chance to come and see what a convention/auction is all about!

This venue easily fits 120 people, has a bar, hot food available all day and will be completed with a top of the range PA system to make listening to the talks and auction a pleasure, not a chore! It is already a well known aquatic event venue and is used most famously for the Midland Charity auction twice yearly.

Entrance fees are set at £3.50 for British Cichlid Association members and £5.50 for non members, children under 16 are free of charge as we believe that these young hobbyists are the future and should be encouraged to join in! All money is to be paid on the door. Door prizes of fish food from our many sponsors are given away free of charge on entry and in most cases are worth more than the entrance fee.

This year we have worked very hard to attract the very best speakers available, it is with great pride that the BCA can announce that for the 2011 Spring Convention we will be joined by Mr David Hulse from Tetra UK and Dr Anton Lamboj from Austria.

First we can introduce Mr David Hulse. David is a well known face in the aquatic industry and is both a lecturer at an aquaculture college and also a consultant for Tetra UK. His presentations are very professional, funny, interesting and full of in-depth knowledge on the chosen subject! David has spoke several times at the North West Cichlid Group meetings and is a superb speaker; you always come away feeling that you have learnt something new that will advance your hobby.

David has given us a choice of lectures and after careful deliberation the committee have decided to invite David to speak about Parasites in the aquarium. We feel that this talk will be relevant to the full spectrum of cichlid keepers and will give an in-depth and technical look at what parasites are, how they operate, how they affect our fish, what we can do to counter these pests and the steps you can take to ensure your aquarium stays healthy all year round!

Second we have a well known aquarist and scientist Dr. Anton Lamboj who will be flying over from his native Austria for this talk and we are very glad to have him joining us. For those that do not know of Dr. Lamboj, he is a scientist, author and aquarist specialising in the cichlids of West Africa.

Anton often leads collecting trips into the Jungles of Cameroon, Nigeria, Sierra leone and Liberia. In the spring of 2011 he is leading a collecting trip to the country of Gabon, on his return from this trip Anton has promised us that he will prepare a lecture about this trip and we at the BCA will be the very first people to listen to this new talk about the Gabon collecting trip. If Anton finds any new species, you may be in the very first crowd to hear about it?

After all this excitement we also have a large 350 lot cichlid auction. This is the place to find some of the rarest fish in the UK, we are open to everyone and anyone can come along to take advantage of the cheap prices and bargain goods on offer. The cichlid auction is limited to cichlids, catfish and dry goods, last year I introduced a new rule allowing 20% of a entrants lots to consist of ‘dither fish’ this was very well received and this years auction will feature the same rule, this means that as well as a Apistogramma you can also buy some pencilfish for the same tank or alongside your new Thorichthys you could also buy some wild swordtails or other livebearer. We think that’s its good to see change once in a while and this new rule makes our cichlid auctions the best in the country!

Come and join us to see what it’s all about.

The BCA committee.
