How do you tell ? I have the sort that is just one large block - not the small individual cubes.

The packaging is extremly unfortunate in that case.

Normally if you take out a piece and cut it in half you see how many bigger ice crystals are inside the block. If there are a lot, that's one sign. When it's thawed and turns out really mushy it's another sign. That's still good for smaller fish as some kind of chum. If it also has a stronger smell than usual it's actually off and shouldn't be fed anymore..

I would use the same thought process I use for myself: If I find a nice piece of meat in the freezer that has been there for a year or more will I eat it? Yes, if it still looks usable; no, if it is badly damaged by long-term freezing.
