Beginners Question

Hello,

Another beginners question for you Apisto-Masters.

If you have both a Male and Female of the same type of Apisto, what could be the reasons for them not to spawn?

My thoughts about it are:

Incorrect water, (hardness, temp, ph, etc.)
Immaturity of one or both of the pair
Health related issues
The are really both the same sex
??

I guess I am wondering, if they are for sure male and female, could they just not be compatible, not like each other, not make each other randy (yea baby yea!), or whatever?

Hope I am making sense here. If not, please tell me and I will try to reword my question.

Could be one or more of those factors or a combination of those and others. It always takes me a while to get my pairs to spawn for the first time. After that, it seems to come much easier for them.

I had a trio of Nannacara anomala (not an apisto, but dwarf none the less) that I had for almost a year with no activity whatsoever. After moving the temp, pH, and hardness all over the scale I just gave up on them. While feeding them one day I noticed the female had change color. After a little looking, I found her swarm of new fry. After further investigation, the water had reverted back to where I had originally started them at over a year ago. Eventually, I had to pull the male because I had hundreds of fry. Just took them a while to get started.

With the new Romer Atlas, when I get stuck I go to it. Find out where they are from and try to set the water up as close as I can get it to their natural environment. After they get started, I can usually adjust the water to parameters that are easier to maintain and they tend to keep on spawning.

i've had luck moving them! seriously. getting a few and letting the alpha's show themselves and using these is a good way, and you are also working with the best.

tankmates or lack of suitable ones will inhibit them. esp when another species has his eye on the female of the pair that you want to breed. i've had this happen with male american flagfish and rams. one agressive male aff killed a nice male ram i had. he 'left'.
