Apistos in a 75g

I am getting bored with my skittish Gymnos in my 75g (48 x 18").

I was thinking about making it a Apisto tank. I would add my Melgar pair and some more.

With proper aquascaping how many pairs of different species can a add. I four pairs too much?

I definitely like the Inkas but not sure what else I want.

Thanks...Bill

It really depends on the aquascaping, species, and individual fish. If properly done, 4 pairs should be able to co-habit a 75. Be aware that A. baenschi (Incas), like other nijsseni-group fish, form a pair bond when breeding. They tend to be very dominant at such times (2 fish against 1).

Thanks for the heads up. You are a wealth of knowledge.

So far I have the F0 Melgar. I will get a pair of F0 Inka50. I will get a paie F0 Cacs. Not sure on the last pair yet.

Scott at Amazon Tropicals in NC has so many new wild caught species now that it is hard to decide.

Borelli's are a wonderful fish to have. I have found them to be more docile then some of the others. I did have them in a 55gal with a trio of Cac's, but of course the 2 females each had half a tank!!! The Borelli's did fine but weren't allowed to nest.
The Inca's were the most agressive that I've kept.
In well planted tank with hiding places, you may get away with having Borelli's, If you are not planning on spawning and fry recovery!!

Ok. The 75g is empty and ready for some Apistos. I will be ordering next week.

My final list is...

Apisto. Baenschi "Inka 50" F0 pair
Apisto. Bitaeniata "Shushupe" trio
Apisto Cacatuoides F0 trio
Apisto Jutai F0 pair

I will try 4 pairs/trios, but may adjust as neccesary.

The Jutai pair may go in another tank with the Melgar pair.

Does this stocklist sound reasonable?

Thanks again...Bill
