Hi everyone.

Bought this apistogramma couple of weeks back. They sold it here in Norway is viejita. After reading several threads and looking at photos I'm not so sure. Anyone help to ID it?

Thanks in advance

It's A. macmasteri (or a hybrid of macmasteri-complex species). "Viejita" has become a default trade name for macmasteri, due to an old mix-up that has become established and wholesalers don't bother to correct ( like "kribensis"). True viejita (a less colorful fish) is now back in the hobby, and is typically offered as "True viejita" from specialist breeders and importers. It is not a mass-farmed species likley to show up in most 'regular" pet shops.

Thanks guys for clearing that up. Now I'll start looking for a female companion for him. According to the lady in the shop , they are difficult to come by. What is the best way to tell the difference between male/female

Look for little or no red on the cheeks, shorter dorsal and anal fins, more black on front edge of pelvic fins, more yellowish body color.
There's no sure-fire way to tell when they're young. Subordinate males can look like females to avoid aggression. If you see one that's bright yellow with black pelvic edge AND is being aggressive toward tankmates ... that's a territorial female.
