It depends on many factors. With heavy feedings, large daily water changes, and higher temperatures, most apistos species can be sexed (if not sexually mature) at 3-6 months. Note that studies on marine fish aquaculture also indicate that under these conditions the fish live shorter lives and do not grow to maximum size. It probably has something to do with early on-set sexual maturity. Personally, I am happy with apistos that breed at 9-12 months of age.
