I purchased a group of Honglsoi from Dave Soures. Someone told me that they are Apistogramma Macmasteri, not Honglsio. Here are some pics, they pics are not great but hopefully good enough to ID.

Thank you

Hi

It seems you are right. The red markings in the tailfin tells us that these are probably either A.macmasteri or A.viejita.

Definitely not A. hongsloi. Rolo is probably correct with his ID. I would need better photos of the head and tail regions to be absolutely positive.

Looks like even the best breeders make mistakes sometimes.

Thank you for the replies. Here are some more pics, hopefully they will help in a positive ID. I am horible at taking pics. I've taken probably 300 pics the last three days and none come out good.

Here is one of the other apistos marked as Hongsloi that I got from Dave two weeks later

I am not absolutely positive, but I still agree with Rolo that it is A. hoignei. A. hoignei has a more rectangular caudal spot, while A. mamasteri's is more oval in shape. A. hoignei usually shows a pattern of brown blotches on the head, which A. macmasteri does not.

Last night the Norwank Aquarium Society in Norwalk, CT had their monthy meeting. The guest speaker was Dave Soures. I spoke to him about this fish and he said it is a new strain of Apistogramma Viejita. BTW, he brought 100 bags of Apistos, I bought 2 bags of Borelli trios and a pair of Trifaciata for $12.00!

It might be called "A. viejita" in the trade, but it definitely is not the form Kullander scientifically described as A. viejita in 1979. The body is much too deep (high backed) and the caudal spot is shaped a bit differently.
