Hi all,
Congratulations Steve, they are lovely pictures (I really like the bottom one).
What were the water parameters for the successful spawn?
cheers Darrel

Cheers mate, i had A.iniridae(F1) around two years ago, i never bred them in the two months i owned them and sold them far to quickly so that i could house another species..It then bugged me that i hadnt done them.

My mate mark gave me a wild pair last time i was down there and i was determined to get these to spawn..They are in blackwater conditions, the PH was gradually dropped to 4 and at one stage sat at 3.5, the TDS is 55ppm and temp is about 84f(the tank is the closest to the room heater)

Its been 2 years since i first owned this fish and the two pairs were in my posession for around 6 months in total. Im finally glad to get some fry because thats about the longest ive ever gone with a species without fry..

They started with around 50 but are now down to 15 or so, im not worried, they are looking great and im enjoying every minute of them..

The greater the challenge the greater the enjoyment!!!

Hi all,
Thanks Steve, that's pretty extreme conditions. I had though that it would be warm, soft acid water. I'm not surprised your sand is so white, (and no algae) it's all been acid washed. In fact I'm not sure that is water, it sounds more like weak vinegar.
cheers Darrel

Lol, cheers mate..Incidently i very rarely get bothered by algae in any of my tanks..The tap water here is perfect and pure and i dont think there are enough nutrients to support algae growth..Long may it continue!!!!!

Great shots! Makes me want to try them. :)

Cheers, they really are great fish and ive really enjoyed the challenge. The fry pictured are now 2 weeks old and i removed them last night because the adults were flirting like mad, they look like they spawned again this afternoon so i might be on a second brood? Fingers crossed.

Congratulations Steve! & great pics.

Thanks Rafael, after looking at your website thats quite a compliment! Plenty more pics where these come from!

Apistogramma iniridae is one of my favorite Apistogramma species. But I had some many misfortune with them... Now I've third try with them.
I have 2 pairs of wilds(bought as A. velifera :) ) since Sunday. They're really shy and I was able to make only two photos of dominating male. I can't wait when he'll "repair" his sail!

Hi Ste,

I've been the same with the iniridae. Haven't had a compatible pair until now(thanks to Mark who had a spare female). The good news is they have got eggs now so I have been keeping my fingers crossed for the last couple of days.

Cheers

Mark

Hi Ste,

Good to hear you have another viable spawn. I've just checked and mine have about half a dozen fry which aren't doing too well (not brought out yet). It's her first spawn and the pair are still young sov not too dissapointed I'll get them next time! Have been compensated slightly by a really good batch of Alacrina and a first for me with Cruzi.
I'm sure Mark will be like a kid in a sweet shop over in Peru. Like you said -jammy s*d!

Cheers

Mark

Brief Update-Couldn't be more pleased, the female brought out about a dozen healthy young last night. This is one of the Apistos I have been after breeding for a good while now - N Transvestitus next! As you intimated in your post earlier Ste - superb site when the young are brought out for the first timeby a species you have been keeping your fingers crossed with:biggrin:

Cheers

Mark

nice pics guys

I used to breed the Apistogramma iniridae (F0) over 15 years ago. Back then, I had a group of 6-7 of them. I would slowly drop the conductivity to around 50uS to induce the spawning. Normally, the water was around 200uS.

It would be interested to see what is the sex ratio from the progenies.

As I understand, high temperature (84F+) couples with low pH will produce mainly males. Low temperature (73F-) couple with higher pH (>6) will produce mainly females. The sex ratio is determined not at the time of spawn but when the frys are raised. I had the same experience with T. candidi where I would get mostly females with only 2 or 3 males per spawn (from population of over 10 spawns).

Apistogramma iniridae

Hi Cockroach,
Just Google "breeding Dicrossus filamentosus."

Join the heartbreak checkerboard Cichlid breeders club.

I am trying them again, presently. I re-visit them from time to time and will continue to until I raise at least a couple dozen fry from the 60 to 80 eggs usually laid.

I have bred them many times but hatching the eggs and raising the fry are much more difficult an undertaking than spawning them. I know many good Apistogramma breeders but only a couple who have ever raised more than a few fry.

This time I am using almost pure RO water filtered through peat, alder cone and leaves. I am keeping them with Coral Red Pencils because they both need the same water. The Checkerboards need them for dithers and this way the Pencils will be prepared for the spawning tank water. The Checkerboards will be spawning anyday. They are ready to go.
