Many of the tank raised Apisto Cacatuoides can do reasonably well in tanks around 7.5 Not sure if they would bred, probably not, but they'll do reasonably well. I have a pair in a tank that averages 7.4 and they're growing out nicely with excellent coloring.

A. cf. eunotus (Orangetail), A. cf. alacrina (Rotpunkt), and A. sp. Wangenflecken quickly come to mind and are commonly available commercially. You can also try A. borellii and A. macmasteri.

Mike - I came across an Apisto Species listing you compiled ( http://apisto.sites.no/page.aspx?PageId=31) that I found helpful. For whitewater species that can better tolerate moderately hard water, are there specific distribution/ rivers on that list that I could focus on? I haven't set up an RO system yet but that day is probably coming.

Whitewater streams are mostly found near the main channel of the Amazon in Peru & eastern Brazil. Not all rivers in these regions are whitewater. Look for a list of whitewater rivers in books and on the net that cover the different water types in South America.
