heyas all just found the site from some help of a friend. finally had some extra time to register. I have had a Pair of these apistos which I had obtained in a trade of large SA cichlids. they have spawned for my friend. I cant get them to spawn for me. I have the pair in a ten gallon tank. a couple of caves, lots of driftwood, oak leaves, java moss. and i use distilled water on a 50 / 50 water change. I also use a product called black water extract, from tetra, to help with the water. temp is around 78 degrees F. . male postures a ton when the female goes by him but she really doesnt want anything to do with him it seems. I have had this pair for over a year now.

Cac's breeding

Hi Jeff

I have three tanks set up as of this moment to breed cacs and all three are filled with fry , orange flash ,trip.reds, and double reds. the water prams are tap water 6 deg. hardness 7.1-7.5 ph. NO black water tonic (save your money) sand bottom and a 3 inch flowerpot small bog log (females like to dig under) small jave fern in corner. thats it ..... they breed in 80 degree temps by the way the tanks are ten gal. I think their diet helps a
lot too. I give mine frozen blood worms .br.shrimp, daphnia. and good flake food . Hope this helps .......... GARY W ........ P.S. get the shrimp hatchery ready!!!!

JWalker,

Try seperating them for a couple of weeks (take the male out). Feed well and do a large water change right before putting them back together.

How did it go? And my females are over an inch now, is that about the right time for mating?

Mine's an inch and she's had 3 broods already, only one has made to to the stage of free-swimming so far. One due to predation and the other because we had to remove the pair from our community tank. They were in a 10 gallon on their own for less than a week before the female was guarding the clay flowerpot. She's now guarding the free swimmers right now in a pit inside the flower pot.
