are apistogrammas and german blue rams, bolivan red rams compatible in a 55 gallon tank.
my second question is should I keep one type of apistogrammas e.g. apistogramma cacatoiodes double red or can I keep other types of apistogrammas in the 55 gallon.
Good answer. Depends on tank layout, visual barriers, "dither" fish kinds and numbers, age & size of the cichlids, who was put in first, whether they are trying to hold territories and breed, and good old unpredictable individual variability. At least rams are not cave breeders, so they wont compete with Apistos for caves. In that respect, Apistos and rams might coexist better than two species of Apistos, or Apistos and Nannacara. If you try it with blue rams (ramirezi), pick Apistos that appreciate 78-82 F, not the cooler water species like borellii. Bolivian rams (altispinosa) might work with cool-water Apistos.
I seem to be managing in my 130L tank (UK). I recently added a pair of A. Hongsloi to the tank with my lone female GBR (the male died of what looked like popeye).
The GBR was set on battering them both to death & neither put up much resistance so I took the ram out for 4 days. I re-arranged the tank, added extra bog wood & plants, they seem to be happy enough together now with nothing more than minor skirmishes at feeding time.
