Apisto male hiding from female

My apisto male hides up by the heater constantly after the female has been chasing him for a few days. The female was recently bright yellow and guarding her cave but now seems to not be by it as often and either chases the male when she sees him or does her shimmy dance. Is this still possibly breeding behavior? Or should I separate for a while. He seems to always try to stay on the opposite side of the tank as the female.

Yes, separate them for a while. If you intend to breed, reintroduce him again in a week.
You might have to do this each time they spawn in the future.

I got home and they seem to be okay and are back to hanging out and not chasing each other should I still separate?

Sounds like she has eggs when guarding the cave . Now with her not being by the cave as much but still chasing the male she might have fry .they are really hard to see especially if you have plants and gravel . Even in sand as fry will lay at the bottom of the tank . If you want fry you could remove the male . If you stress her to much she could eat them . Hope this helps .

Hi,

just in case you happen to live in Germany (or Netherlands): I have a wildcaught female A. psammophila, you could have it for free. I have no use for it anymore.
