Apisto Identification

Hi guys,
My name is Ash and I'm new to the forum. I live in the UK.

I have the following fish in my tank:
Golden/Zebra Danios
Dwarf Rainbows
Dwarf Lemon/Honey Gouramis
Serpae Tetra
Plecs – Red Whiptail, Indonesian Goby, Pitbull, Bristlenose, Golden AE, Otto Affinis
Rams – Electric Blue, Golden
Apistogrammas – Hongsloi, Agassizi, Viejita, Cacatuoides, Panduro, Macmasteri
Scarlet Badis
Assassain Snails

I need to identify some of the Apistos as I seemed to have gotten a bit confused. I did try and upload some photos but the KB allowance is so small I had trouble doing it. I need to look into it and will try agin later.

What I think is a female (yellow and black) Viejita is getting it on not with the handsome male (red and white) viejita but the sunburst double red Cacatuoide! they have disappeared into the coconut shell together. I was wondering if they will cross breed.

thanks

Ash

Hi Ash, welcome to the apisto forum. You must have one humongus tank to house all of these fish together. It's hard to say what species you have without seeing photos. Check the size of the photos that you're trying to send. Reduce the to a 600 pixel width and you should be able to send them without problems. That being said, I doubt that the female is a true A. viejita. 99.99% of all "viejita" found in the hobby are actually A. macmasteri. I highly doubt that a cacatuoides would successfully cross with either of these macmasteri-group species. They are too different genetically. Besides, even if they did breed in your tank most of the fry would be eaten by the other tank mates. There are just too many fish for one female to drive away from her fry. I would just enjoy your tank and fish and let nature take its course.

Thanks for your reply Mike.
I am now even more confused because my macmasteris look nothing like what I thought was the female Viejita. I think I better upload some photos before I confuse everyone!

Thanks

Ash

No2 looks to me like a female cac. She has alot of colour in her fins so is probably a partner to the triple red male in the bottom picture.

Everything else I agree with Bill.

Photos set complete

Hi guys,

I have managed to upload all the photos now.

Apistos 1 and 2 I think, were sold to me as pair of Viejitas.
Is Apisto 4 a triple red cac.
Apisto 6 I am not sure.
Apistos 7 were sold to me as a pair of Macmasteri
Apisto 8 I am not sure.
Apisto 9 I am confident is a female Agassizi
Apisto 10 is this a double red cac as it is more yellow and orange.

Apistos 2 and 10 are the ones going into the coconut shell together.

My tank is 53 gallons.

I would be really grateful for help in identification so I know what I've got!

thanks

Ash

Hi all,
With the usual proviso that I'm hopeless at both I.D. and sexing.
(I've just edited this as the order of the photos isn't the same as the descriptions at the bottom of the photos)
1. is a male A. macmasteri
10. & 2. are a pair of (Double Red) A. cacatuoides, female in 2.
6. Is an unhealthy looking fish, and I'm not going to try and I.D. it, other than to say it looks like it is probably somewhere in the Regani complex - A. caetei ish.
7 & 8. A. macmasteri, 8 may be a female.
9. Probably female A. agassizi (I can't be sure from that angle)

cheers Darrel

1. Domestic form of A. macmasteri (frequently sold as "A. viejita") - male
2. Same as above - male
3. Domestic form of A. cacatuoides (not very red "Double Red") - pair
4. A. cacatuoides Double Red - female
5. A. cf. eunotus - female
6. A. cf. eunotus - female
7. Same as 1 (above) - male
8. Same as 1 (above) - male
9. Probably same as abover - female?? (poor photo)
10. Probably A. cf. eunotus - male? (photo doesn't show enough diagnostic feature for positive ID)
11.Domestic form of an agassizii-group species (photo doesn't show enough diagnostic feature for positive ID of species or sex)
12. A. hongsloi - male (left); A. cacatuoides triple red - male (middle); A. panduro - male (right)

Hi all,
To make sense of Mikes' I.D.'s he has used photos 1 - 12 in the album, rather than the names written at the bottom of the photo's (the female cacatuoides in photos 3 & 4 is "fish 10"), this is what I did first, (I've edited my post) but some of the photos are actually different shots of the same fish.

Hope that makes sense.

cheers Darrel
