Apisto Hongsloi

Hi

I just pick up a pair of very colourfull Apisto Hongsloi
How can I tell if there Hongsloi 1 or 2

I tend to not try to put labels on them. The general rule is that if the fish has the red line that runs from just about the anal to the caudal and it is red, then it would be hongsloi II. The other hongsloi would have the same line that is definitive of hongsloi but this line would be black. And also, if you have a really red fish with more red on the flanks also, then chances are it was a fish bred from multiple fish from different regions (forms). Excellent fish they are and some of my Favorites! good luck and best wishes.. cheers. john

I agree with Apistt_ed, the domestic forms of 'A. hongsloi' were produced by crossing A. hongsloi (Rotstrich) with one or more of the other closely related forms in the hongsloi-complex. In truth, based on the description of the collector of the type specimens immediately after capture & still alive, the type specimens of A. hongsloi had no red on them at all! From what I have seen 'A. hongsloi' II is a fish with a lot of red on the face, abdomen, & caudal peduncle. It sometimes has short lyretail extensions on the tail, something that never occurs on wild hongsloi-complex forms.
