I'm new to these type of cichlids and would appreciate some help about the fry. The tank is 29 gallons, planted, sand substrate, wood, cave. There is one male and 2 females, a couple of tiny apple snails, a tiny 2" BN pleco.

One female has laid eggs and they hatched either yesterday or maybe a day before? I saw the fry for the first time yesterday. It is so cool!

Anyways, the mom seems to be doing a good job. She has moved them at least 3 times so far and chases away the male and other female.

A few questions:

- should I leave the other apistos in there with her and the fry or remove these other two?

- what should I be doing for food? I've never hatched brine shrimp, is this what they need? I do have some Small Fry liquid food, should I use that and target feed?

Congrats on the fry!

In a planted tank if Mom is protecting them the male may just spawn with the other female so I would leave them in there. BBS is the best to feed fry, if you can get some eggs and hatch them it is not that hard....directions are on the package. Use a turkey baster for the bbs and target feed them. If you can't get shrimp eggs microworms are good to, but maybe hard to find.

At some point you will need to move the fry to a 10g of their own so cycle a sponge filter now so you are ready when they need it.

Keep us posted.

i tend to leave the adults uless a lot of aggresion develops, as long as there is room it should beok

as for feeding liquid fry foods may work, be careful with the volumes and ensure you do frequent small water changes to stop the water fouling with these type of foods

small live food will be taken more readily as the movement seems to stimulate feeding
