Bonjour.

With only 5 fish, the math just isn’t really on your side. Most WC altum are just too scared to spawn in captivity. Out of 100 adults, you may be lucky enough to get 1 female that will be brave enough to spawn.

Spawning WC altums is hard. It took me 300 WC imports to get just two pairs of WC fish that would spawn. I was offered some advice near the beginning of my altum spawn quest. If you want to spawn altums, start with F1/CB stock, with no fear to fight they are very easy to spawn.

WC = wild caught
F1 = first generation in captivity
CB = captive bred (generation number irrelevant)

Save your self much heartache and expense and only obtain tank raised Pterphyllum altum. There is no better advice anyone can give. Tank raised P. altum have my become much easier to find for sale in recent years. The prices are not high compared to buying and losing many wild specimens over and over and over again.

This guy is selling tank raised p. altum; they are not cheap but he is reliable and good service:
A friend has about two dozen Altums including every strain shorelineaquatics has bred and they are perfect P.altum. My friend Ed, is from Venezuela and has been a longtime Altum connoisseur. He had to move some of his Altums in with eight big Uaru fernandezyepezi. You don't see that combination every day. He has Atabapo, Ventuari and one other strain of F1 or F2 P. altum. Another group shares space with Red Spotted Green Discus. His smallest sizes are still able to look at the Cardinal Tetras and not think, "food!"
