Acidic, Soft-Water Julies

A couple of years ago I bought a trio of young J. transcriptus "Gombi" from a local fish auction. I didn't have any hard water tanks at that time, so I put them into a plant tank that got a larger percentage of regular tap water in its water changes. However, the tank was still only about 3DH and 6.5pH. They settled in and started breeding. They have been breeding ever since, even though the pH gets down to 6 at times. As I understand it, when fish like this are shipped, sometimes their water becomes more acidic in transit. So I guess that it is not a first. Has anyone else had experiences with Africans in soft or acidic water?
