You can find out this information by getting your hands on a copy of Aqualog Book South American Cichlids II. It shows how certain groups of apistos are connected.

The Aqualog book, "Southamerican Cichlids II" is so full of errors and mis-identifications that I can no longer recommend it. It doesn't even conain all of the dwarf cichlid genera. The DATZ book "South American Dwarf Cichlids" is more up-to-date, more complete, has accurate identifications, and is less expensive. Between the two, there is no contest.

It is just the name used by the author who proposed that linage/group/complex/assemblage/etc. used. It is descriptive, but there are no firm rules.

Each author has his own names & definitions, too.

Ooooo!! I might have to check that out too! The pair of Hongsloi I got at the auction a few weeks ago are spawning as are most of my other fish.... I think... *still trying to see into the Macmasteri's coconut shell to see if they did or didn't spawn since the female refuses to leave*
