A. Eunotus breeding

Hello all,
A friend (poster cmoreash) and I are planning on a program of sorts to breed Apistogramma Eunotus. He has a pair with fry right now. When they are ready a pair is going into my tank to be bred. From there we will swap fry to avoid siblings spawning together whenever possible. This way we can supply the lfs with better fish. We both have a few questions on the start of this: Where could we obtain other A. Eunotus to bring in fresh genes to the pool? Also are they harem spawners naturally? When I put them in my tank to breed what should the m/f ratio be? Any other ideas or things we should know before embarking on this?

Thanks!

autarkeia1,
I will keep an eye out for Eunotus, but you should realize that there are numerous Euntus species. So if you intend to bring in new blood, you have to be sure of what you have and how to find the same species. If you are working with wild fish, it should be a problem to work with the ones you have now (at least for awhile). Someone has got a type of Eunotus (maybe Max - The Digital Aquarium) but I can't quite remember.
If you have a little larger tank, you can go with a couple of females and a male. They are prolific breeders and will mate with several females. I like to use smaller tanks and keep one female to a tank and then move the male around after he services the female. It cuts down on alot of the headaches.
Other than that you probably would benefit from slightly acidic water and fairly low hardness with a temp of around 78. I think that should get you a fairly reasonable ratio of sexes in the fry. good luck,,, Neil

Hi Guys,
Boy it's been a while since I checked this forum.I 've been very busy working on our new"The Digital Aquarium" website.
First of all,I totally agree with Neil ,there are many different eunotus forms. You should make sure that you don't mix different forms together.
I'm currently selling the A.cf .eunotus "Orangetail" form. This form is very similar to A.cf.eunotus "Santa Anna'.The older DC books are misleading, because they only show one form of A.eunotus.I recently got Koslowski's book and he lits at least 4-8 different eunotus forms.
The AB auction for a eunotus trio mentioned in a post here is mine.

This picture is of a juvenile A.cf.eunotus "Orangetail".
He's currently 2"TL.He will be better looking when he reaches full adult size at 3-3 1/2".

farm41,
We're all out of tanks; that's no reason not to get just one more fix  When the drug of choice is there, sometimes you just have to do whatever it takes. I'm always out of tanks, butwhere there's a will there is a way. I hope my wife doesn't read this though. She really does think I need help with my addiction.

Max,
Nice fish and yet another very nice pic. The site is looking good. Keep that coolpix clicking.
