Hmm... if you wish to breed this species, you could adopt the single male, multiple female approach with, e.g., 5 female. IF you want to keep the fish in pairs, the tank you mentioned could keep 1 - 4 pairs without much problem provided that you have enough hiding places for the weaker fish. :)

I don't know about other's experiences here, but in a 30 gallon aquarium(I think that figures about right from litres?), I wouldn't plan on successfully keeping more than one or two pairs. A harem would be an option, as I have had my male elizabethae spawn with multiple females. When I originally introduced my fish to a 30 breeder (30"x18"x12"), I put in three males and four females, figuring this would allow the dominant male to establish himself to the females and find compatible mates. This worked well, but when he was done the other two males were chased into hiding and were not allowed out even for feeding. They had to dash for food and then back to cover--not my idea of ideal. Eventually I lost one male, and finally removed the other along with a couple females to another tank. The sub-dominant male didn't color up or get as big so long as he was kept in the main tank. Now others may have different experiences, but that's my take on elizabethae.
