Well, how do they do? I was considering having a harem of them in a 29 gallon tank, and breeding them in a separate tank (12 danios, 8 white clouds, and 5 platies will eat apisto swarms in a hurry). Would the PH of 7.2 and the TDS of about 173 work for general maintenance? (I can use softer water for breeding).

I don't think that is too extreme for successful breeding. Try it.

Lower the pH and water hardness a bit ... and remember, 'a community tank is not a breeding tank', so remove other fish.

Personally, I would first try with only your tap water. It could be good enough as it is.
