I am new to dwarf cichlids and have become very interested in apistogrammas. I have a 20 Long that I would like to setup for a pair. I really like the orange flash would a pair be ok in my 20L? Which ones would you recomend for a first timer in dwaf cichlids? I was thinking of some tetras like cardinals and some corys would these be ok? Is sand ok?

Hi Tank,

Orange Flash Cacs would be a good choice. You can probably keep a trio (1m2f) in a 20 long.

As for the cardinals & corys, if you want to raise fry, the corys are out and no more than 1 cardinal or most any other tetra. If you don't plan to raise fry, cards and corys are fine.

Get pencilfish and Oto cats if you plan to raise fry. Hatchetfish are fairly safe as they spend most of their time at the surface while fry stick to the lower part. Personally, I haven't had any trouble raising cac fry in a 10 gallon with just 1 cardinal, 1 Oto and a pair of cacs. Although my yield was probably diminished.
