Without a clear and certain identification, I am guessing the best / kindest thing is to leave things be and not introduce any other apistos to the tank, even if female? He has pretty much staked out the entire footprint of the 20g long at this point. Fun fish to watch go about his day ... had...
And this shot, to give an idea of scale. He's not a big thing. Managed to play with zoom a touch to make it not appear that something scary was taking pictures.
You know I never thought of his snoot as being deformed  Ah well. :)
I took two more shots to see if that helps. My gut is telling me is likely a male, and I can see where there is yellow and blue on his dorsal rays and pectorals ... that, if in breeding dress would likely show more...
I've not been able to find an image on the internet yet of a pertensis with the first dorsal ray being black and a red spot at the base of the tail. Otherwise, does look a lot alike!
Halloo!
Some time ago last year, I purchased a pair of Apistos from my LFS. They were not labeled, and the owner said they came in as a mistake from the supplier. I purchased them. One failed to acclimate/was pestered by the other and died within the first week. The one left is a delightful...
Oh no, I'm well aware that it feels its reflection is another ram being invasive. I am accustomed to territorial fish getting fussy at the reflection initially, and then they eventually get over it. This is the first fish I've had that hasn't. Thus, was wondering if introducing real fish...
Allrighty then. I have a 40b with the following stock: 12 neon tetra, 12 rummynose (bleheri), 1 blonde bristlenose, 1 Bolivian Ram.
Now, the Bolivian eats well, is attentive, looks good. But he spends more time than I would have thought healthy staring and sulking at his reflection. I know they...
briztoon -- Well, that explains a lot :) I have noted from the reading that I've done, that while dorsigera and curviceps are quite similar, dorsigera does tend to be more boisterous and leans more to the carnivorous than omnivorous in eating preferences. Which certainly seems to be the case...
Hey there ... From all the reading I've done, I -think- I have 2 L. dorsigera. I'm not terribly sure which fish is which sex. I managed to distract them long enough with my other hand to get some pictures snapped. They are very much like puppies in that regard ;)
I have noticed that these...
Figured I'd give a slight update. They appear to be coming into their colors now. And while there is the occasional quarrel, have paired off ... as much as kribs can be I guess.
I'm still learning how to take pictures. I did have to drop the gamma a bit on my camera. The female is in the...
No worries :)
Now, I've not done anything special other than make sure they've been fed ... but in the space of 24-36 hours, the female, who has been eating like a pig, has finally rounded out her belly. She's also starting to color up.
This, evidently, has improved her confidence. The male...
The male is coming out more often now. I figured he would once he got hungry.
My water is pretty soft, I'm not too worried about that.
I am worried about two things. The male chases the female around about 80% of the time he sees her. The other 20% he's fine with her around. I'm not sure...
Getting a glimpse of the tail on the male is proving troublesome. He is definitely a bugger that hates being looked at.
The substrate is sand, yes.
I managed to snap a couple more pictures, as they've gotten more bold. Again, somewhat washed out. Partly because of the lighting, partly...
Update:
I placed a couple more dithers into the tank.
The female has lost her habit of vertical stress-barring it when out in the open. She's out and about far more, pecking and sifting around. She will display occasionally at her reflection as she patrols the tank. I assume this is...
I managed to get a picture of the female. These are the two clearest pictures, and unfortunately, she paled out and popped horizontal stress bars just from me trying to get the picture. I am using flash. I should note that the colors (other than the dark brown / black) I am not seeing easily...
Halloo all.
I will preface that I am trying to snag photos of the fish in question. However, they are still wary of cameras ;)
Was hoping that perhaps a detailed description could help someone nudge me on the right track, though, while I try to snap a pic.
I acquired two Pelvicachromis...
I do plan on having some moss and a couple ferns in there. Haven't decided which type of moss though. I grow Christmas Moss best, and it looks better to me, but I have easier access to java moss.
I guess I should have said I didn't want to go the heavily planted route ;)
