Hi, my name is Phil Patton..........

Welcome! Are you and your fish in Germany? Always interesting to see the differences in methods of fish keeping and the species available between different regions of the world.

I.D this Apisto please and sex if possible

Looks to be female. That's about as good as I get. If you have time, get some more photos of face, tail, etc; the experts will want to know that, and any other information you can provide (where did it come from, what was it called when you acquired it?)

    prospective 10 gallon setup

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like an interesting setup. I think the pool filter sand will work real nice; it's nice and light and doesn't compact. Your apistos will pick at the sand, sifting, and spit it out, so be prepared with that with your chain swords (I like using dwarf sag because it...

    Hi from Missouri,

Welcome! I'm not familiar with the stores in St. Louis, but I know that a few of the guys from the St. Louis club (MASI) frequently make it over here, and I have some fish that are ready to go out (I'll PM you). What kind of apistos are you interested in?

Advice Regarding WC Apistos and Dithers.

Your tank looks great, and will look even better when the plants have grown in a bit. If you are getting juveniles, a trio will be OK for a while, but you'll probably want to add a lot more cover (plants filling in, more driftwood, especially some up towards the top of the tank to give shelter...

Photo sizing - a pet peeve of mine

Mike - are you talking about linking of images, or uploading of images? When I link an image, specifically to photobucket, they automatically drop it down quite a bit. When I upload an image, the forum software should be able to limit those file sizes being uploaded. I'm asking, because when I...

    Looking for advice

A couple thoughts: - What is the amount of water flow in your tank? Apistos like very little current. - You say you're running CO2, which means live plants, which means high(er) power lights; could be a situation where they came from a dark tank (breeders can't afford to run lights on tanks!)...

What do you think of this filter?

Only experience I've had with lava rock was in a filter in an ornamental pond outdoors. What I found was that it easily clogged and was difficult to de-clog. It also, over time, broke down into 'dust' and therefore 'mud'. I think it would work; the exhaust tube probably needs to be pretty...

My Apistrogramma Trifasciata (wild) with fry

I don't think I've ever seen an apisto or other fish for that matter, pull the loopy loop as that momma did at 0:08.

    apistogramma agassizii male eating fry

What kind of apisto is it? I don't know many male apistos that care for the young. I would garner a guess that if the tank were large enough, the female would be chasing the male away and keeping him away...although, it's not uncommon for tank bred fish to get eaten, much like it is not...

    Shell dwellers

You probably haven't seen much because they are from two different lakes; the peacocks from Lake Malawi, and the shellies from Lake Tanganyika. Personally, I don't think it would be too much of a problem. Just make sure you leave some open sandy areas with no shells. Now, if you were going to...

    Shy Congochromis

Add some dithers, and add more overall cover. Mine like lots and lots of anubias or oak leaves.

    First time biotope

Soak the wood in a barrel or storage container full of water, anchored down by rocks there.

    First time biotope

First thing I learned on this site was that there are no rocks in the Amazon. :) Sounds like a great potential tank.

    medications

Add an airstone attached via aquarium air line to an air pump, or lower the water level and allow the hang-on-back (HOB) filter to dump the water over a higher distance.

apistogramma agassizii // Females keep dying!

When adding new apistos to an environment where there are already apistos, it is important to rearrange the tank entirely; as territories have already been established, and the new fish will not know where those territories are; thus the aggression. I like to move the old fish to a separate...

    The ID quest goes on!

Reminds me of A. eunotus 'blue cheek' (as they called them) that I got from Wetspot last year. Sadly, all I got were males, and they destroyed themselves. Seems like there are lots of interesting eunotus color forms that, no matter what we call them, seem to all be a little different.

    agassizii sexing

They look pretty small; but I would guess so.

    Apistogramma with tetras

Depends on how you define 'small'. I've used neon tetras and dwarf pencilfish with no trouble; however, you will have to keep an eye on the Cacatuoides, as they have a pretty large mouth, especially the males.
