Help sexing triple reds

I just got a pair of apisto triple reds. One is certainly male, but the other I can’t tell. They were sold together but with uncertainty about the smaller/lighter one’s sex. They certainly look different and it has some yellow that has gotten brighter as it has settled into the tank but the pelvic fins are not black. Interestingly, the smaller one seems more confident in exploring the tank. First picture is the obvious male. Others pictures are the one in question.

Domestic breeds like this have reached the stage where females have a lot of male features due to breeders chosing the most colourful ones of both sexes to reproduce. Also incest-related problems are common in these.

It could be a female, but I wouldn't bet on it.

The fish in the second picture looks like it could well be a female, to me at least.

How do they interact?

So far they are still hiding more than anything. I have only had them a few days. The obvious male is shyer. The lighter one explores more. I haven’t seen much between them either way although I have started to see a few short chases where the male will chase the lighter one but just a spurt and no flaring.

Re-designing and starting a new fish room all over again. This time we'll have many more Apistsogramma species. We are expanding.

Hi,

just in case you happen to live in Germany (or Netherlands): I have a wildcaught female A. psammophila, you could have it for free. I have no use for it anymore.
