The funny thing is when i watch them like this morning. The female clears an area and I believe wants to breed but the male seem to lack interest and ignore her. I always though the male would accommodate a willing female ?
Not in all apisto species, especially members of the nijsseni-group. I've found that if 2 pair off but are unsuccessful raising a spawn or 2 that they aren't interested in breeding with each other. They may live together fairly peacefully but have no interest in breeding with each other, more often than not for the rest of their lives.

18 months later (from the previous picture in this thread the male):

They have never bred but i lower the temp from 78 to 75 about 2 weeks ago and he and the ragged female cleared out the right side of the 40b (working together) so maybe there is a small chance they will breed though not really counting on it. It was the first indication of him pairing up with a female.

Did they ever spawn?

Not yet. The ones in the 29 i see the female about once a month and the male about 3 times a year - and we are talking about glances not out and about views. I suppose they could have spawned and i would never know it because they would never show the frys.

In the 40b i ahve a male with about 5 females. He seems to have bonded with 1 of the female in that they work as a team to clear out an area now and then but then they never seem to actually breed; or if they are breeding the eggs are not lasting. On the bright side none of them have died and the female in the 29 looks quite large (not over weight per sey) and quite healthy. I would almost question if she is the same species as the one in the 40b - something about her size and shape is just a little different. Both males look the same with the one in the 29 a little larger.

The ones in the 40b do not hide - the females are always up front waiting for attention (food) and the male comes up midway to eat being more reserved. The weird things is the one in the 29 never hid when they were in a shared 65 but when i moved them to the 29 they never were out again. The ones in the 40b (of which i moved multiple females over to the 29 to entice a pair) never hid even when moved to the 29 or moved back to the 40b. However all of them were purchased together at the same time.

Hi,

just in case you happen to live in Germany (or Netherlands): I have a wildcaught female A. psammophila, you could have it for free. I have no use for it anymore.
