It should be a few days from now that she brings them out, if you dont have BBS to hatch than your going to have to get some kind of food for them, at least frozen BBS and a small pinch of yoke from a boiled egg [a little goes a long way] and use a turkey baster to feed the fry with [small amount three to four times a day]. If your going to raise apitos your going to have to learn how the hatch BBS, it really is easy.

Hi all,
Ok great. Do the fry like them?
They do, my guess is anything that combines small size and movement will elicit the feeding response. It is difficult to tell with the fry, but I keep small Corydoras spp. as well, and Micro/Banana worms are the food that really gets them excited.

They probably aren't a complete diet in the way BBS would be, but they definitely help in fry survival.

cheers Darrel

I usually keep a few microworm culture going just in case I don't have BBS ready for an unexpected spawn. A word of warning - the cultures can spoil fairly quickly in hot weather & end up stinking to high heaven.

Ok. I plan to keep multiple cultures. What temp do they go bad in?

If you cannot hatch any baby brine, do you have a large clump of Java Moss or algae balls, etc., these will be teaming with microscopic organisms that the fry can eat for the first day or two. You can buy brine shrimp eggs from numerous online sources. As mentioned above, the are easy to hatch and many videos are available on how to do it on YouTube. Personally, I'd leave the fry in with the mother. Apisto's are great parents.

Ok thanks. I do have some moss I can put in there. I ordered some micro and banana worms and they will be here next week so I’ll put moss in for them to graze on until then

One thing to remember is that bbs shelf life is very short with regards to high nutrition. After a day or so you have to wait till they are old enough to feed them or hatch a new batch. Also bbs life in the water column is very short - micro worm and vin. eel will live a lot longer in the tank (for better or worse). Pity these things aren't like kribs - with kribs you just watch and the baby grow.
