I think you're getting mixed up between the pectoral and pelvic/ventral fins. The pectorals are the ones on the side of the fish (the equivalent of arms) which, in my male, have a bit of black colouration near the base of them. The pelvic/ventral fins are the ones that are on the underside (ventral side) of the fish in the pelvic area (equivalent of rear legs), near the anal fin. These are the ones that often have black leading edges in female Apistogramma.
