What Plants?

I'm ordering Apistogramma Ortegai as well as Appistogramma Hippolytae. The Ortegai will be going into a 20H by themselves. Does anyone have any plant recommendations for them? I'll be going to my LFS early this week that carries a large variety of them.

If you have a look through the Tropica web site plants in the <"easy" category> are usually suitable.

Have a look at Bob Wiltshire's recommendations in <"Plants">. His whole <"aquarium care"> section is well worth reading.

Otherwise we have some threads, try <"Questions about ..."> and <"Duckweed Index">.

cheers Darrel

Cryptocoryne wendtii, Java fern, Bolbitis, Anubias nana, and Java moss are some of the easiest and most reliable for low-light soft-water tanks. And if you want floating plants, there's Frogbit, Salvinia, and Watersprite. (Watersprite grows like crazy in some tanks, and will not live in others - I have not figured out why).

My light is closer to medium most of the time. I have Hygrophila Corymbosa, Anubias Nana, Anubias Coffeefolia, Elodea, and Bacopa in other tanks. So far, Bacopa is my favorite. I tried watersprite once and it didn't do very good. I may try it again.

Hey Katie13, note that Gerald mentioned Water Sprite as a floater, not a rooted plant. I know a lot of people want to grow it rooted in the substrate. I usually have no trouble with it as a floater, but I found that it didn't do so well when the flourescent light bulbs got old. After a year or so, most bulbs lose a lot of the useful spectrum. You may not notice until you replace with a new bulb.

I picked up some water wisteria today. They didn’t have water sprite. I treat them the same though. It’s partially in the substrate to keep it down, but the majority of the roots are out. I had to trim it down so it would fit in the tank!

Hi,

just in case you happen to live in Germany (or Netherlands): I have a wildcaught female A. psammophila, you could have it for free. I have no use for it anymore.
