water changes

I have a pair of triple reds and around 40 two week old fry in a 29gallon tank. I have been doing 5 gallon water changes twice a week,using prime and discuss buffer. The fry appear healthy but should I be doing water changes more often?

20% twice a week sounds like more than enough new water. Watch out for uneaten food rotting in the tank -- its a tricky balance between keeping the young-uns well fed and not feeding more than they can eat. Plants and snails will help too.

Its a planted tank,so good there. What snails are good to use? Nurite snails aways die on me and I had mystery snails eat blue ram fry. Would amano shrimp work or would they be predatory?

I use pond snails (Physa, Lymnaea) and ramshorn snails (Planorbis).

Hi all,
I use Ramshorn snails, MTS and Asellus as egg and fry "janitors".

Ramshorn snails aren't safe with eggs, but MTS and Asellus are.

Red Cherry Shrimps are also fry safe, but Tiger and Amano shrimps will eat both eggs and fry.
