Used plastic barrels

My dad can get free 55g barrels that were used for transporting peanut oil. Is there anyway to clean them out so that they can be used for water storage for fish, or am I better off trying to find a different source?

Dishwashing soap, then blast them out really well with a hose, then fill and let them sit a few days, then dump and refill. I got a bunch of pickle barrels for $5 ea from Mount Olive Pickle (about 5+ yrs ago). Smelled like pickles for a few months, but no oil. (Fortunately I like pickled fish).
