Transporting Fish

Greetings everyone!
I'm planning on visiting some Apisto friendly stores, on the last day of my vacation. My concern is, if I purchase any fish, would they survive a 10 to 12 hour drive home? In the past, I've purchased fish at LFS which are only a 30 minute drive home. Should I ask them to be packaged in any special way? Each fish in an individual bag? I'm worried that there may not be enough oxygen in the bag and the fish may suffocate before I get them home. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

maybe get some of your own breather bags? and just keep them in a bag and a still as possible. if they survive to the store in a truck, they should be ok in your car as long as thay arent in sunlight or near a vent. also, dont get them the same day they come off the truck. rubber band the corners so you have a round bag so no one gets stuck in the corner and smashed

Just tell the store that they will be in the bag for a long time and they should be able to fix you up just fine. When I go to weekend conventions, my fish are usually in a bag for all 3 or 4 days.

What Z-man said--8 days in the bag is tops for me--dont put them in the sun in your car either.

Thanks to everyone who posted advice on transporting fish. Your tips were helpful and encouraging. Well, I visited a couple of Apisto friendly stores at the end of my vacation. And I purchased a trio of A. viejita "Rio Meta" from AquaPassion in Laval, Quebec (near Montreal). They packaged my fish in individual bags and even put them into a insulated fish box. I brought along a thermometer which I put into the box, so I could monitor the temperature as I drove home. The AC in my vehicle doesn't work. Anyways, all the fish made the 10 hour drive home in excellent condition. Plus, now I have an insulated box which I'll take with me whenever I'm going out of town. You never know what Apistos you may find on your next "expedition"? :wink:
