Ok, is there some way we can help with the spam? Can we help identify spam threads for deletion (or delete it without a moderator)? Can we use a captcha for starting new threads? Other ideas?

When i was an admin for our local club's Yahoo Group, i would only "approve" new members if they said something about their fish interests. If their initial request to join didn't sound convincing, I would send them "tell me why you are interested in this group" and wait for a response before approving them. Of course that was an easier task for a local club than for an international one like this.
