To the Forum:

Just out of press is Lamboj & Stiassny's description of three Parananochromis species from Gabon and Cameroon: P. axelrodi (Gabon), P. brevirostris (Cameroon & Gabon) and P. ornatus (Gabon).

Of the three, two are known to the hobby, more in Europe than in the US, as

P. sp. "Makokou"=P. brevirostris
P. sp. "Belinga" =P. ornatus

Photos may been seen in L&S.

P. axelrodi is a rare form that is not in the hobby, for which no photos are currently available.

Thank you.

Primary Sources

Dear Colin,

Primary sources (scientific descriptions et al.) are usually forwarded to me by directly by the authors. In this case, doctors Lamboj and Stiassny.

Thanks.

Randall and others in the know,

Is there anyway to get these descriptions in some online form? There are a couple publications that come out quarterly or so, but hard to come by in my parts. It would be really nice to read up on these guys before the ink is even dry on the paper :) If the authors would allow, I think it might make a nice category on the WASMP page ... of which has become rather stagnant and could use some new material.

Scientific Descriptions et al.

Hey Ken,

From my experience with it, scientists carefully guard their work until it is out of press. I must confess that certain information does come my way via the authors directly prior to publication, but in strict confidence.

Individuals can subscribe to scientic journals, but usually they are quite expensive. That's why most subscribers are usually institutions like libraries, institutes, universities and museums.

Through some major museum online book stores, individuals can purchase certain papers directly. Museum (and university) Web sites to check include the American Museum of Natural History; the British Museum (Natural History); Cornell University; the Museum for Comparative Zoology, Cambridge; la Musee Royale d'Afrique Central (MRAC), Belgium; Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet (Swedish Musuem of Natural History and Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle (Paris). There are other good ones, of course, but these particular institutions are known for their work with fishes.

Hope this helps.

I'll have to check at Ohio State University, see if they get anything like that. I used to know a couple perpetual students there that could probably get access to those resources...now, if Dr. Lamboj would like his own place to post his research, I have the perfect spot :D
