Sponge Filter on In flow nozzle

In trying to lower the flow (the current flow is a little higher than I would like) I have put a intake pre filter on the output nozzle - I understand that sponge will get yucky and I will need to clean -

Does anyone know of any issues this will create - the flow is still breaking surface tension and I can add a air stone that is hidden if I need more - it probably is not moving the detritus quite as much as I would like (as I can see some of the plants have some stuff staying on the leaves) but I can see things moving towards filter chamber and some movement of plants on the opposite side so it is not totally still
Any thoughts on issues I may not be seeing ?
