Hey,

I bought a pair of those really neat beats at the NEC convention auction(Great convention , by the way) and now, they act like the typical Pelvica wanting to spawn: digging, female showing her colors to the male, etc etc...But no spawn yet :(

Do they need soft water ? Because this is my next step, i'm changing some water from the tank with Ro tonight, i'll see if it gives results.

Anyone have any experience with these ? :p

Thanks
Phil

Soft water is a must IME. I also saw my pair exhibit a LOT of foreplay... weeks worth it seemed. AFter they spawned the male pretty much beatthe female to a pulp and took care of the eggs himself. I do not know if this is typical... since I only had a single pair and only had two spawns from them.

Ok, thanks for the help

Will try with RO water and see if there is any change.

I bought a breeding pair, luckily. I'm crossing my finger that my male wont act the same way your did :p

Thanks a lot

I had several pairs of wild P. signatus spawn. One of the pairs always killed the other after the fry began to swim free. Usually the female killed the male (by tearing huge holes in its head). However, one male did manage to kill a female by attacking her on the sides and belly area. These are the most aggressive West Africans 'dwarf' cichlids IMO. I think that it is best to remove one parent after the fry start swimming free.

Soft water seems necessary for a successful spawn. I maintained the tds hardness at between 60 and 75 ppm. However, it is possible that these fish don't need quite such soft water. I assumed these water parameters were necessary based on my experience with other fish from the Kolente river system. I kept the pH at around 6.5. Good luck.
