this is so simple yet, i've not seen anyone mention it yet, so here goes.

my female viejita died last week, nothing showing, but that's the way it goes. the male has always been a big pita, and since it was time to pull a fish, he was 'it'. he is very fast. i decided i would get him today when i was doing tank maintenance, ie, cleaning and big water change. when i had the water drained down, i went looking for him.

he was no-where to be seen, so i figured he was in his 'cave', a 4 clay ounce pot turned upside down. i turned it over slowly, and there he was. he immediately swam into the pot, and i lifted him right out of the water, carried him downstairs and put him straight into another tank, putting the pot on the bottom. he never freaked out a bit. maybe this is too simple, but he seemed so secure in his home, there was actually no stress on him or the other fish. it is definately something i will be trying again.

aspen,
Sorry to hear about your male. :(
Any time you can reduce the stress that much in transport, you 've got a good thing going. That is one definite advantage of dealing with cave brooders.
