Hi all, I've got a new pair of apistogramma iniridae (well I've had them for since mid Dec last year). When bought them I told the store owner that i wanted a pair (male & female) but he said since they are so young, its hard to tell their sex. Now that ive had them for roughly a month, I can kind of tell which one's the male and female, but I just want to make sure I have their sex right.

Here are the pictures of them, thanks in advance for your help =]

To me, they look too young/small to tell which sex they eventually show. Males will develop a high sail-like dorsal fin and long thread-like ventral fins. These fins on females will remain shorter.

Although the fins are not fully open and it is not that easy to tell, I would say both pictures show a male.

Thanks Loriculus for your comment, I understand its harder to tell when they aren't flaring. I can see a bit of red developing around the males lips. and the lips of the potential female is smaller compared to the male. I dont know if those are indications of their sex though. But thanks anyways!

Mike, Thank you four your comment, I understand it is hard to tell when they are too young, I am trying to feed them a healthy balance of foods so they would grow faster haha. I just dont want to have 2 males in the tank, if thats the case, it would be problematic

Your chance of getting a pair from two fish is 50%. That's why I always get a group when it comes to Apisto.
