Raising Apisto Fry

In the last couple of months I've pick up a pair of Baenschi and TR Red Cacs. Both have bred in their respective tanks and have fry that are 2 weeks old . As I've never really tried to raise fry I'm hoping members can share some knowledge.

Generally speaking can you keep successive batches of fry in the same tank as the parents, when do you move them to a grow out tank?

How big should a grow out tank ideally be to raise the fry(is there a ratio to use a guideline X number of fry per gallon)?

Can I put fry from each apisto in the same grow out tank or do they need to have their own?

At what age can you expect to be able to sex the Juvies?

I appreciate the help and any advice

Thanks,

Tony

Hello Tony,

1. Generally I keep fry 14days with the parents.
2. Each will need their own grow out tank aprox 60-100litres, otherwise you will not be able to know which is which if you have the same together in one tank.
3. Juvies sexing at about 1 to 1 1/2 cm if you are lucky
4. suggest to take out fry at night and syphen them out
5. also very important to fill the fry tank up with the water from main aquarium, so it does not fluctuate to much etc for the fty in the new tank
cheers jk

Just to add; apistos take at least 3 month before males can be recognized, but it usually take longer - 6 to 9 months. Females require a longer time because juvenile and 'sneaker' males are hard to distinguish from females. If you're interested in sell the offspring, I would expect that you'll need to raise them for at least 6 months. This is one of the reasons why breeding apistos for money isn't as profitable as for many other fish.

Thank JK & Mike,

As I'm not a breeder but just a guy with a hobby , time and money are not a problem.

Looking forward to watching these fish raise their spawns and then them growing up.
