I like breeding mouthbrooders but have not bred many in recent years, they intrigue me with their behaviour and broodcare.
At the last NWCG auction i bid and won a reverse trio of Pseudocrenilabrus nicholsi (su-do-cren-i-lab-rus) a mouthbrooding dwarf cichlid from central/eastern Africa..Ive found it a very aggressive species, the smaller/younger male killed the older male within two days of housing them in a 36x18x18 tank, the female stayed out of the males way due to the amount of courtship the male performed..I missed the actual spawning but only realised they had spawned after i had moved the female away from the male to give her a rest, a few days after i noticed her jaw starting to bulge and realised that she was carrying.
She then went into a tiny, bare, 12x8x8 holding tank(Bargain £1 from the same NWCG auction"Laugh") to brood her fry.
Today she has spat out 15 fairly large fry and ive been watching her pick them up at the first sign of danger all day today..They are a great fish and come well recomended, im also pleased to have another new species to add to my bred list..
