I think what rafael might have meant was "ultimate list" rather than "last list".

Because so many species are being discovered and have yet to be scientifically described, finding a comprehensive and completely accurate list will be very difficult if not impossible. However, here are some sites with some fairly substantial lists of apisto species. I don't know when the first one was last updated, though.

Apistogramma Lists

Dear Rafael,

2la has furnished a link "List by Mike Wise" (http://www.apisto.com/FAQ/ASG_List_Names.html) to the Apistogramma Study Group (ASG) web site. Mike Wise maintains as comprehensive and up-to-date a list of valid Apistogramma species and informally designated taxa that exists. On average, updates are made to the site list every six months.

Good luck.

rafael,

With the introduction of new species, reorganization of existing species, and current descriptions of previously undescribed species (“sp.â€Â), a current and updated list is hard to find.

Mike Wise maintains as comprehensive and up-to-date a list of valid Apistogramma species and informally designated taxa that exists. On average, updates are made to the site list every six months.

Even Mike’s list, although great and based in solid references and probably the best overall on the web, is still not current. For example, in 2002, A. rubrolineata was described by Hein, Zarske & Zapata, 2002. This species described in 2002 is not even on Mike’s list yet. Six other Apistogramma species have been described since that time, none of which are referenced in this list.

Please, two list

1) Apistogramma with scientific descriptions.

2) Apistogramma sp.

Thanks & Regards

The only list that I know of that currently reference the newly described species and breaks the genus into 2 categories (as you have asked for) is the list on Apistogramma.com. This list is incomplete at this point, but is being work on and displayed regularly. It also has the benefit on a database with a search element to provide cross-referencing that exists (on some species now, more later) in each species profile. What was A. sp. “Rio Acre†1 year ago, is now A. acrensis Staeck, 2003. You will no find A. sp. “Rio Acre†on the list, but if you type it into the search and press enter, it will list a link to A. acrensis. I have done things this way because of the difficulties associated with hundreds of AKA names that plagues this genus. Many are not appropriate names for the species, but are used regularly in the hobby. So a common name can be used to start a search for the actual species. It is a big job and will never truly be complete, but it is already, IMO, the most updated list on the web.

Here are the links to the 2 respective lists:

Apistogramma - Valid Taxa (Described species) http://www.apistogramma.com/cms/index.php?option=content&task=section&id=11&Itemid=44

Apistogramma - Undescribed Taxa (Undescribed species - "sp.")
