There are reports of macmasteri-group males taking over the entire surface area of a 2 meter (7 ft. long!) tank for its territory. In the wild 50 apistos have been found in a 2 ft. thick pile of leaf litter the size of your tank. It all depends on the species & how the tank is decorated. It is not the number of hiding places, but the number of territories that are made, preferably out of sight of each other. Species that are less polygamous (A. borellii; regani-group) tend to have smaller territories than the more highly polygamous species.
