Nijssenii Question

Hi All. Reacently I purchased a pr of nijssenii from a fellow apisto person. Well it turned out that I didn't get a pr but 2 males. So we got together and I got 2 more females I had hoped. Thease look and act very much like the 2 males I already had. One might be a female though I realy have my doubts. The Question I have is how young or at what size do the females get their signature panda coloration. Mine are the smallest of the four is an inch maybe an inch and a quarter. next largest is 1 1/2 inchs and the other 2 are 2 and 21/4 inches. the three larger ones are definatly males.

I would say by an inch the sex should be easily determinable. I full grown female may only be 1 or 1.5"

Even if they do not have their yellow colouration yet, females should display dark spots on their flank and caudal peduncle.

Hi Ken I was thinking that a female nijssenii would be showing the typical nijssenii look at an 1" thanks. Here arre some pics this is the littelest one I have questions about wheather it is a male or not.

Thease are the best pics so far my camera is not the greatest.

I could be wrong but the small ones look more like young males.

Nice fish though and definitely worth holding onto. You are bound to get a female or two sometime.

Thanks Ken and Mike :frown: That is what I feared Man now I need some females any body got any? I have 6 1/2 inch A.cruzi for trade also have 50-60+ which became freeswimming yesterday and 50+ rotpunkt wich became freeswimming over the weekend and some Nannacara anomala fry born New years eve. Can trade. LOL

It would be a good trade if your "A. cruzi" are the true A. cruzi with the bi-colored caudal fin (& if I had any A. nijsseni):frown:.

:wink: Hi Mike I am 95% sure they are the true cruzi they are F-1 from wild stock. and my male does have the Bi colored tail fin.

I hate to say it, but these are not the true A. cruzi (A-83). This is a closely related species, A. cf. eunotus "Schwanzstreifen/Tail-stripes" (A-77). This is a rare & desirable species in its own right. I wish I had some nijsseni females to trade with you!

I egree with Mike, I have a picture and breed on my site, the A. eunotus has often a red/brown spot around his "brestfin", see www.ernstvangenne.nl

Real A.cruzi or not, these are VERY nice fish.
