New to Apisto Breeding

Hey everyone,

I am new to Apisto's and breeding so I am looking for some advice. I have a 40 gallon breeder going through its fishless cycle now for a pair of cacatuoides. What would be good tank mates to add that would be fry safe? I have seen a lot of people suggesting pencil fish. Thanks!

Is this a breeding tank or a community tank? The 2 are generally non-compatible unless the tank is extremely large. Yes, a 40B is usually not large enough.

Thanks everyone for your insight! For right now, I am going to keep the pair by themselves and see how it goes.

If your OK with losing fry your options widen significantly. I often have fry make it to adulthood if the tank has lots of cover.

killifish, endlers, small tetras and danios, etc. I think in a 40 breeder you have enough room to keep something else.

but if your dead set on raising all of the fry, a couple of pencils or leaving the pair alone is the way to go.

Do you think it's worth it to add fish as dither? I have read a few articles that say it makes the apistos more comfortable and more likely to breed.

Thanks! I will probably keep them alone for now and maybe add some tank mates later on down the road.
