It appears to be A. cf. pertensis. This is a species that has several geographic forms inhabiting rivers from the Rio Tefé to the Rio Curuá. Is this the same fish sold to you as A. sp. Altamira?

In the past, this fish was called A. cf. meinkeni and even A. meinkeni. A. sp. Pimental is the same species. A. sp. Orangesaum might be, too. Search under these names, too.

Going to wait

Well I think I will wait for a while and let them grow/mature more before I put much more effort into identifiing them.

I'm thinking

The more I look and watch them I'm thinking A. Caetei.
Is this a possiblity?

No, A. caetei is a much deeper bodied fish. It also does not show a lateral spot, which this fish appears to have. The lateral band does not break downward at Bar 7, in front of the caudal spot. This feature occurs on A. caetei. I'm pretty sure it's A. cf. pertensis, a.k.a. A. cf. meinkeni.

Meinkeni

Mike most of the photos of Pertensi I have seen have higher dorsal fins than my fish, but the photos of meinkeni have the same dorsals with the separated rays on the front. I am new to apistos and am only starting to understand the differances on some species. Can you recomend any good books on these fish?
Thanx

This fish is neither A. pertensis nor A. meinkeni. It is a separate species related to these 2 species. It was originally thought to be A. meinkeni before the real A. meinkeni entered the hobby. Römer noted that there are many difference - particularly size & geographic distribution - and suggested it be called A. cf. pertensis because it is more closely related to A. pertensis.

As for books I recommend, see the following link on this forum: http://www.forum.apistogramma.com/showthread.php?t=5241
